You bought property in Turkey. You want to ask a few questions.
Q. What about health and home insurance?
A. If you are going to live in your property full time, it is advisable to take out long-term health insurance before you leave the UK. Most UK banks offer long term insurance, ask your bank for estimates. On your arrival in Turkey, check out how to contact a doctor who covers you. Learn where the nearest hospital is and ask if they accept your insurance.
Turkish property and house content’s/building insurance is available at some banks in the UK. Earthquake insurance is compulsory. Depending on the size of the home it will cost roughly £30.
Q. Do I need to register electric and water in my name?
A. Yes, TEDAS is normally the supplier. You will need:
1. Your deeds/TAPU and a copy as well.
2. Your passport and a copy as well.
3. Money to pay the registration fee. It is roughly $80 YTL.
4. Unless you speak Turkish, it is advisable to have a Turkish speaking person with you.
Q. Are power cuts normal?
A. Yes. Check with your neighbors and check your fuse box. If theses are ok, be patient and the power will return eventually. Keep some spare candles on hand.
Q. Can I bring furniture from the UK?
A. Yes but it can be very expensive and time consuming. Unless it is of sentimental value it is not worth the time, money and hassle.
Q. Can I drink the water?
A. In some areas you can but it is not advisable. You can have water delivered to your door. An initial deposit is charged for the plastic bottle and varies in cost from area to area.
Q. Can I get SKY TV?
A. Check around at the electronic shops in your area.
Q. Can I pay my bills by direct debit?
A. Yes, at most banks you can. You will need to set up a bank account. You will also need to show your passport and tax number.
Q. Can I get a residency permit?
A. Yes, It is best to do this on your arrival. You will need to go to the “Yabancý” Police station in your area to apply for one.
