For those of you considering living here permanently, I thought I would run through some of the costs involved. I live by myself with my dog in a three storey Triplex with air-conditioning. I use the air-con regularly all year round for both cooling off and heating the house during the winter. Utility BillsWater bill 17.00 ytl for 2 months Electricy 58.00 ytl for 2 months Council Tax, around 15 ytl per tapu, per 6 months Phone bill 7.00 ytl (line rental charge per month) Digiturk Sat TV 29.10 ytl per month (basic package) Food & Drink1 Kilo potatoes 0.50 Ytl 1 kilo mushrooms 4.00 ytl 1 kilo chicken 6.00 ytl 1 kilo fillet steak 18.00 ytl 1 kilo mince meat 12.00 ytl Bread 0.25 ytl White wine (Dolca) 7-8.00 ytl White wine (Kavak) 8-9.00 ytl White wine (Cankaya) 10-12 ytl Beer 2.00 ytl Brandy (bottle) 34.00 ytl The prices above are what you can find in most supermarkets, they do vary from market to market, so its worth shopping around. As you can see, prices are a great deal cheaper than in the uk. Sarah

Thanks Sarah for the advice, but if you don't work your money out in Turkish Lira (new turkish Lira is now called YTL Yeni Turkish Lira), it may help to know this. YTL are similar to the pounds and pence in the uk. We have 29.30 ytl i.e. 29 Ytl and 30 Kurus.
Last year the exchange rate varied on a daily basis, between 2.30 ytl to the pound and 2.70 ytl. This year the average is around 2.50 ytl to the pound.
These price guides may be of help.
5.00 ytl is equal to 2.00 pound 10.00 ytl is equal to 4.00 pound 20.00 ytl is equal to 8.00 pound 100.00 ytl is equal to 40.00 pound 1000.00 ytl is equal to 400.00 pound
If you work from these averages, even though the exchange rate changes, you will always be about right.
