British tourists prefer Turkey for holiday The number of British tourists visiting Turkey increased remarkably in 2008 and realized above expectations due to Europe's being more expensive, the AA quoted Ahmet Barut, chairperson of Turkish Hoteliers Federation (TUROFED) on Sunday.
"Such interest of British travelers stem from the fact that Europe is now much more expensive for them. British pound's losing value compared to Euro helped the Turkish tourism sector," Barut told Anatolian Agency.
"British tourists, who have always preferred Spain and Greece for vacations, chose Turkey as a holiday destination this year for the first time," he also said.
Barut said that the number of tourists arriving in Turkey in 2008 increased considerably compared to last year's figures. He said the number of tourists visiting the country rose 17 percent this year.
German tourists top the list of foreigners who preferred Turkey for their vacation according to the May figures who are followed by Russian, British, Bulgarian, Iranian, Dutch, Georgian, French, Ukrainian and Greek tourists.
Turkey estimates to host 26-27 million tourists in 2008.
