Can anyone tell me the formalities of applying for a resident permit in Koycegiz. Is it something the estate agents can deal with or is it something you need to do yourselves. I have heard a lot of contradicting advice on this and wonder what the general consensus is for residents in this area. Is it easier and cheaper to just keep renewing your entry visa or os it better to apply for a resident permit living in Koycegiz? Any advice will be grateful. Thanks Andrew

Hi not sure what the criteria is for a permit, but as far as I know you apply for it yourselves, anyone living there can give you the information, the main criteria is that you have a certain amount of money in a turkish bank, it used to be 1000 pounds, but not sure if it has changed now. I haven't bothered myself, as I still coe over to the UK, at least until the end of the year, as I retire at the end of September, so won't be going over to January now, as working till then, but do ave friends that have their residency visas, so will find out some more info for you. You can apply for citizenship after 5 years if you wish, but not many actually do that.

Hi spoke with Cliff last night on msn, and asked him and the criteria for residency is as follows :- you have to have as much as it costs a Turkish person of the same status to stay in Britain for the same amount of time.........reciproicty.....you do the math...lol That is what he says, so an english pension is sufficent to live on there, as it is twice what a turkish pensioner gets, and to have sufficent in the bank for emergencies. The visa is somewhere between, 100-150 pounds or it was last year and I think it is for 2 years, then you can get a 5 year one. but the price does change each year. Hope that helps a bit.

Thanks Ann/ Cliff hope by the time we get there it has not gone up again, better still they align to their EU desire and relax on the permit period for Eu residents.

The up to date cost of a Residence Visa is 500+ytl. (£200) per year each person. The period you can apply for depends on the expiry date of your Passport. Most people apply for 2yrs.,The money is better in your Bank than theirs. There is very little difference in cost between 2 or 5yrs. Applying is relativeley easy, if a little time consuming, just go to the Passport Office in the Police Station (Belidiye). You will need: 1) Passport & photo copies (3 will do) 2)Photo copy of Bank Statements (3) 3)A letter saying why you want to stay in Turkey, 4-5 lines is the norm. Letter must be in Turkish. 4) A copy of your Tapu or Rental Agreement, you must have an address in Turkey. 5) 8 passport size photo's 6) Someone to act as a Translator.
You will then be given a letter signed by the Police Chief to confirm that they are holding your Passport and told to go back in 30 days to collect Passport & Res. Visa. Any un-used photo copies will be returned to you
You can't apply until the last day of your Tourist Visa expiry date
Good Luck

Resident Visas.
Migrants and students from outside the EU are to be charged an extra £50 for UK visas to support communities struggling to cope with migrants. This could have an impact on the cost of a Residence Visa to UK ex-pats here in Turkey. We are charged the same cost as a Turkish Citizen entering the UK on a Res. Visa, that is the reason why we pay the extortionate amount demanded for our Res. Visa, its reciprocal. Belgium ex-pats pay £40 p.a. and Germans pay £10 p.a. Watch this space

Just been notified of the 2010 Residence Visa Fees, there is an horrendous increase from 2009. The fees charged are now shown in GBP, and the fee is paid in Lira at the Tax Office, so whatever the exchange rate is at the time, will determine what fee you pay. 2010 1 year GBP 370,00/ 888 lira @2.40tl/GBP 2 year GBP 730,00/ 1752 lira 3 year GBP 1090,00/ 2616 lira 4 year GBP 1450,00/ 3480 lira 5 year GBP 1810,00/4344 lira The fees have basically increased by 50%, to give you an idea, 2009 fee for 2 years was 1154 lira, in 2010 the fee is 1752 lira, its a joke when inflation is 6.5%. It now costs £8.00/week to live in Turkey and I estimate ex-pats put around £8,000 a year into the local economy, which could well disappear if they decide to pack up and leave Turkey. Will the authorities never learn or understand the fundamentals of " Do not shoot the Cash Cow" Bulgaria looks a good bet.
