Kurban Bayram ( Festival of Sacrifice ) begins on 27th November and lasts for 4 days, ( could start lunchtime on the 26th with the Banks closing ). For those who are interested in the religious reasons for this Bayram, the following is a brief introduction. Abraham was ordered by God to sacrifice his son to prove his faith. Abraham looks at the boy, then, slowly, reluctantly, raises his knife to strike the boy down. The strike is never made. Instead, God, who, in order to test Abraham's faith, had ordered Abraham to kill his son, intervenes, sending an animal to be sacrificed in his place. From that day on, no human sacrifice would ever be made by the people . And to this day Muslims remember the story of Abraham on Eid Al Adha - the feast of sacrifice The meat is distributed amongst neighbours and importantly the poor, and you will see trays of meat being carried around the streets to be handed out. So if you are offered some meat, don't be offended.
