There are numerous people, both ex-pats and turkish complaining about the number of dogs running around Koycegiz at the moment, I have counted 13 today, there could be more.
The problem has got worse over the last few weeks, and can only get worse in the future.
A person from Kalkan posted on TLF, (18th April 2013, in a thread refering to the formation of KAWG), the following.
I have an apartment in Kalkan and have had it for the last twelve years. When I first went there the condition of the animals was pretty much as you are describing. A few English people got together as you are doing and formed an organization called KAPSA .You might like to know what has happened in the intervening years. They succeeded in raising alot ofmoney and have been responsible for raising the health of the feral animals. But when the locals in the outlying villages found out about it there was a lot of dumping of their dogs into Kalkan. The present situation is that there are packs of now well fed feral dogs roaming the streets and intimidating lone pedestrians, and chasing moped and scooter riders, some of them crash. They operate a policy of neuter and return, but since they don't know where they originally come from they stay in Kalkan. This means that they have to feed all these animals during the winter months when there are no holiday makers around and the restaurants are closed. So the animals tend to stay around the feeding areas which upsets those who live near. occasionally a group of them get poisoned or there is a mysterious disappearance. Most people who don't agree with Kapsa's policy think that the answer is a compound outside of the town where all the feral dogs are kept and those not claimed are put down after a certain period. Kapsa are opposed to this. Not surprisingly there are those who consider that Kapsa are now part of the problem! I do think that some serious thought needs to be given to what you are about to start.
How true is this statement, and what is the answer to the problem ??
